PURC To Announce A Review Of Tariff Increases

Industry and Organized Labour among other stakeholders could breathe a sigh of relief as the PURC is expected to announce a review of its recent utility-tariff increases by the close of this week.

This comes after extensive stakeholder consultations were held.

The move forms part of interventions by the presidency to respond to the concerns raised by industry and the general public about the recent increases.

The Vice President John Dram Mahama chaired a high level meeting between various stakeholders to consider further the concerns raised by the stakeholders about the increases. The meeting which is a follow up to previous consultative secession was attended by officials from the Ministry of Finance, the energy advisory-team and advisors to the president.

The meeting amongst other things reviewed various options relative to the concerns of consumers. Following a meeting on Monday July 26, the Vice President directed the PURC to ensure that government subsides benefits the intended category of Ghanaians while it concludes discussions on how to mitigate the effects especially on the non residential class of electricity consumers.

Meanwhile discussions are also ongoing on how to ensure that consumers who reside in compound houses are taken care off. It is recalled that moment after the announcement of the new prices by the PURC, government called on the regulatory body to dialogue with the various stakeholders who are raising concerns.

Some of the stakeholders including the Ghana Employers Association and other have sent representatives to President Mills to lay bare their concerns. President Mills in one of such meetings promised government’s commitment to intervene in the current circumstances to promote industry.
